We love to utilize book clubs for advanced readers using chapter books as a way to extend reading lessons and introduce advanced skills and strategies. It's a fun and engaging way for students to be challenged. But... Postmodern Metafictive picture books are a wonderful way to challenge advanced readers! These are fiction stories that are self-reflective; they refer to themselves within the text in fun and silly ways. Many times, they are interactive. They are playful yet challenging, due to their, often, nontraditional formatting, and alternative narrative structures; all features that intrigue and stimulate the advanced reader, and provide opportunities for teachers to extend reading comprehension lessons, among other lessons! The materials requested for this project are purely hardcover, postmodern metafiction books. They will be used in small group to create a curriculum that is meant to challenge my above-level readers, and they will be used as whole-group read alouds to engage and entertain and teach ALL of my readers.
