There are two main reasons that I feel these books will enhance my students 8th grade experience. I want to make sure that my classroom library has books that open doors for my students. I want them to feel accepted and to see characters they will identify with. Representation in literature is essential for students to feel connected to the larger community. The second reason is that I want all of my students to be able to open windows to the world and glimpse into lives unlike their own. In order to build empathy and to understand the world they live in, I feel that students need to be exposed to other people's stories. When students read about other cultures and communities it allows them to find common ground. Stories are a powerful way for students to connect and understand their place in the world.
