My goal is to provide future students with a classroom that is equipped with flexible seating. Current scientific research (Ali McManus et al., 2015) supports the notion that flexible seating can improve students’ learning experiences. It has been shown that traditional classroom seating can negatively impact a student’s learning due to prolonged sedentary periods. My vision is to have a classroom that is engaging to all and empowers their diverse learning styles, not one that is encumbered by antiquated seating design. I want to ensure that it is an intentional space that increases students’ levels of engagement, fosters active learning/teaching, and supports the physical, as well as the psychological, well-being of each and every student. In addition, a flexible seating classroom is more conducive to a healthy, kinesthetic student learning process than a traditional classroom. I am certain this type of seating design will help engender and maintain a positive classroom community, year after year. Ultimately, by incorporating flexible seating, I am looking to create a learning environment within my classroom that promotes and encourages creativity, accountability, and collaborative learning.
