Many times, because my classes are across a few grade levels, the students do not know each other. I have found that using interactive games can encourage them to "meet" the students who sit next to them as they learn! The games are all centered around specific lessons and incorporate an objective that accomplishes learning and/or decision making for the current topic. For example: "Pit" for stock trading; "Monopoly" for accounting transactions; "Cover your Assets" for net worth. I requesting funding for "Thrive Time" because I expect it will provide a more cumulative range of objectives and topics. I have found that allowing students to interact in an occasional game day can sometimes motivate a student that otherwise seems disconnected. The period becomes more social, congenial, and active. Afterwards, both the students and the teacher (me) reap the benefits of game playing: students tend to have an increased awareness of the topic learned as well as now know more students in the class; and I have witnessed learning, inclusion, and motivation. "ThriveTime for Teens Board Game—the Money and Life Reality Game" was developed with guidance by Sharon Lechter, co-author of the books: Think and Grow Rich, Three Feet from Gold, and Rich Dad Poor Dad. The game claims to teach financial management with an emphasis on giving back to others and inspiring discussion and further learning. The reviews, including ones from both teachers and CPAs, are all excellent, and I think this will prove to be another way to engage and teach students about money. Thank you.
