“Flexible Seating” is the idea that we can move away from a traditional seating chart and provide a space where children can choose their own seating. If you walk into a flexible classroom you may see: wobble chairs in replace of traditional chairs, high top tables for standing, pillows and lowered tables for sitting on the floor. It is my goal is to meet the needs of every learner. One critical component in doing this is to provide them with a space where they can learn best. My hope is to design a space where the children can remain actively engaged, collaborate with their peers, and communicate effectively. It is my hope that I can add many unique areas in my room that appeal to every type of learner. I envision a large area rug for our morning meeting time where my students join together daily to bring a sense of community to our classroom. I’d like to add a high top table so children can make the choice to stand to collaborate closely together during their small group time. During my quadrant time of teaching, I hope to see active participation from students utilizing the different types of seating such as cushioned chairs, wobble chairs, or even floor pillows. I hope to see them delve into a “just right” book in our reading corner full of comfortable seating and perfect lighting. Research proves that there are ample benefits to flexible seating. One amazing benefit is choice. What empowers a human being more than the right to choose? Giving students the opportunity to choose what works best for them teaches them how to problem solve. Research suggests that choice correlates to motivation and engagement.
