The students I teach are predominantly African-American and live on the North Side of St. Louis City. The school I work at has had a sub for music for the past 5 years. This school year with them has been wonderful but I have noticed that students have difficulty keeping a steady beat and creating simple rhythms. Funding this project will help reinforce these concepts because my students are naturally drawn to the drums. They are always asking if I have more drums and specifically a drum set. The cajon that I am requesting sounds a lot like a drum set and allows multiple students to play all at once. When I brought in my djembe, they were so excited to listen and play freeze dance to various African rhythms. Students take turns sometimes two or three at a time playing this drum during lessons. Having this instrument in the classroom will excite and engage students in the music room. It will also help me ensure that students can keep a steady beat and create simple patterns. As students age and master these concepts, they will start to create and compose their own projects. Having more instruments to perform their compositions on will encourage students to soar.
