My project is to create a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning center within the classroom. The STEM center will be a vital component when I am teaching STEM concepts and it will allow the children to have hands-on learning. The STEM learning center will include materials to promote early math and science skills. The students will utilize the STEM materials in three activities throughout their school day. First, the STEM items will be utilized by me when I am teaching a math or science concept during circle time. I requested the simple machines, gears, pendulums and engineering blocks as a direct visual when I am teaching. I also requested two read-a-loud science books to share with the children. Secondly, the children will have an opportunity to learn STEM through play. Each day the children explore center-base learning. The construction sets, the LEGO DUPLO STEAM Park and ZOOB Builders will be available at the STEM center. The students will demonstrate their engineering and construction skills while building with slides, pulleys, cranes, balance scales, and catapults. Thirdly, the children participate in a small group each day. During this activity, science and math skills are reviewed and new concepts are introduced. The Tinker Toys, pattern blocks, jungle math counter, Hot Wheel Tracks and marble runs will be investigated to help master the world of early STEM. The STEM learning center and STEM toys will become the foundation for my students to experience math and science.
