My goal is to provide a classroom that instantly engages students and gets them excited to learn using critical thinking skills that would promote a mixture of various aspects of creativity. Since this class is still in its infancy, our materials and supplies have been limited. For example, we have inherited a LEGO wall but do not have LEGOs to build with. Using LEGOs in engineering activities gives students an opportunity to build models to try and solve real-world issues. The STEAM Lab is also in dire need of aluminum foil. There are a variety of STEAM challenges that students will participate in using foil. Many other STEAM projects use items such as screws and nuts, wire cutters, hammers, soldering irons, gears, pulleys, levers, wheels, motors, and wires. All of these materials would be used to build/engineer models to solve world issues posed as STEAM activities and tied to the NGSS. The STEAM Lab is bare; it also needs shelving for organization and containers to hold supplies for students to access during STEAM activities. Because each STEAM class is 50 minutes long, it is important to be efficient in lessons and dispersing materials. While our STEAM Collaboratory would mainly provide hands-on building activities, we would also benefit from Chromebooks for research and to incorporate designs using computers. Most of these students do not have access to technology or the internet at home. Students would only profit from using technology in the classroom. The ultimate goal is to foster creativity in thinking, discovery of our world and promote innovation in trying to solve our world issues. This class will help them prepare for college and a career in the 21st century! Please consider donating to our lab. Our students, school, and community will greatly appreciate it!
