Guided Reading is very important in the early years of school. It helps students learn how to decode words with assistance so they can eventually self-correct when reading on their own. With guided reading, children get the chance to discuss the text and offer opinions etc. They learn specific reading skills such as inferring, predicting and retelling. They also practice writing skills they will need as well as word study skills. All of this is done in small groups, which is greatly beneficial to the students. In order to teach this way, we need a few very important materials! One of them being guided reading book sets so the children are exposed to many different genres. Another item is personal whiteboards and magnets for the students to use for word study. Lastly, we are in need of notebooks to do guided writing lessons because after all, reading and writing coincide with one another. The students and I will be so happy and excited to receive these items. Every time there is a new book, or they get to work with new materials, their eyes light up! When a student is motivated they learn a lot better!
