Reading has always been a cornerstone of learning. Through reading, students are able to learn about others and see themselves in literature. But now more than ever, reading for pleasure is on the decline. In a test-driven educational system, students are told that they are bad readers time and again. These students then never bother to pick up a book because they are already defeated. These books will engage students to browse my bookshelves because they will see themselves in books. Many of the books on this list are from diverse, new voices in YAL (Young Adult Literature) that will encourage my students to read.
