An iPad in my Social Studies classroom will enhance student learning, and increase student engagement. An iPad is an indispensable component to interactive and engaging learning stations in a Social Studies classroom. I plan to use an iPad to enhance my learning stations and center activities for each unit in our Social Studies curriculum. For example, I will use the iPad, and the Nearpod application to create interactive lessons that my students can work through at their own pace. Through applications on the iPad, my students will be able to use technology to gain new information and vocabulary in an interactive way, as well as take virtual field trips and experience history firsthand. This will allow me to create a rigorous lesson and activity ahead of time on the iPad, and then have my students work through the interactive lesson and activity in a small group, while I work with a different group to complete another task, or accelerate learning. Through this type of instruction, students will be able to work at their own pace, and will be afforded the opportunity to experience history in a hands-on environment, through the use of technology. The use of an iPad in my classroom will allow my students to work with STEM objectives in an interdisciplinary setting. Social Studies is the ideal setting for STEM application. My students will be given the opportunity to work closely in a hands-on environment and solve real-world problems, while still reinforcing our Social Studies curriculum.
