My students are first graders, with the majority being English Learners. This means in a typical class of twenty-four students, most of my students speak a language other than English as their first language. In the past nine years, I've had the joy and honor of teaching children representing more than fifteen distinct cultures. Aside from trying to learn in a brand new language, my students face other challenges. The majority of the children attending our urban school live below the poverty level. Many of my students, even at ages as young as six and seven, fulfill many responsibilities in their homes, including serving as caretakers for their younger siblings. Despite any challenges they may face, each child comes to school with a sense of joy every day. These children love to learn and will do anything to accomplish their goals.
