Because we have so many standards to cover, labs must be relevant and fast. Using a grow light and the Wisconsin fast plants will allow students to experience planting, germinating, and growing plants. Growing the Wisconsin Fast Plants using the grow light and the recommended fertilizer and potting soil will allow students to experience seed germination, differentiate between monocots and dicots, identify phototropism and gravitropism. Students can also look at the root structures under a microscope and use dye to identify the xylem. The materials will allow for setting up an experimental design which will allow students to test how fertilizer or light or watering affects the speed of plant growth and the health of the plants.
