In working to make sure our students have everything they need to be successful, we are hoping to add a few collections of Hi-Lo books to our classroom. Hi-Lo books are intended for students who read below their grade level, but have interests above their grade level. For example, a high school student may read at a middle school level but he isn’t interested in reading topics that middle school students are interested in; he would be more interested in something geared towards his age group. He wants to read, but books that he currently has available are intimidating and therefore he plays video games instead of reading a book! In order to see our students continue to learn and grow as readers and as individuals, adding a Hi-Lo book library would push and encourage students to increase their independent reading level by reading about topics that interest them at their appropriate age level. I am hoping to raise enough money so that both our middle school and high school students will have a large range of books in our library to choose from that range from Upper Elementary/Middle School interest levels to Young Adult interest levels. With this library, students will be able to sign books out at their leisure to read during lunch, study, or on the weekend to help improve their independent reading levels!
