Last week, my 3rd grade ELA students read Chapter 1 of I Survived Hurricane Katrina -- a historical fiction book about a boy who is trying to survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "What will Barry do next?" "How was the storm so strong?" "Where is New Orleans?" "I think I've heard of this before!" These were just some of the reactions in our class. They were so engaged, I spent each weeknight printing 42 copies of 4 more pages of the book -- a costly and time-consuming solution. Students took turns getting to hold the single teacher's copy -- they deserve better. Please help me purchase a grade-level set (42 books) so that each student can share in the joy of reading such a great book, and they can continue to practice at home! In the meantime, we'll be reading nonfiction articles about about Hurricane Katrina to learn even more about the historic storm and its important lessons.
