As a fifth grade teacher, it's my job to prepare my students for the craziness of middle school. Preparation includes not only the learning aspect of school, but the social aspect of school. I make it a priority to teach my students "life lessons" that they can carry with them long after they leave my classroom. One life lesson that my students and I value is the lesson of accepting others for who they are and respecting them despite any differences. In an effort to make this impact long-lasting, I would like to engage students in a book study with the book, "Save Me a Seat" by Sarah Weeks at the start of the 2018-2019 school year. By starting the year off with this powerful book, we will be able to focus on building that strong classroom community filled with positivity and respect all year. My hope is that what they learn in my class will be contagious way beyond fifth grade. What better way to educate and make change makers in the world? I truly believe that my role in all of this is to empower my students to want to impact the world. I plan to use this book to do just that.
