Hands-on learning in math is a common practice in my classroom. The lack of adequate tools for these activities is a constant problem. By supplying these materials you are guaranteeing that students have the ability to work with their hands and solidify their math education. The practice of hands-on learning in math enables students to make the transition from concrete to abstract math concepts easier. While most hands on learning for mathematics ends in elementary school, I have consistently found it is a necessary strategy for improving understanding and retention of math models. Working with rulers and protractors help students solidify their understanding of fractions. Using the algebra scales allow students to see that balancing equations can have an actual effect.
