The global focus of our school's mission - our core educational domains include "recognizing perspectives", "investigating the world" and "taking action" - relies on students being curious about the world and the different ways that people and communities approach life. Studies show that reading fiction is one of the most effective ways to help children develop empathy - which is crucial for taking an interest in people other than ourselves. This project will provide a copy of a "How to Raise a Reader" to each advisement class in support of developing a culture of reading and inquiry throughout the school. The advisement class is the heart of the school's pastoral care for the students, and an ideal place - particularly in the middle school classes - for a trusted adult to support students into developing habits as lifelong readers. Some students are lucky enough already to have the habit, and some teachers already have success in nurturing this love in their students - but having a copy of this text in each class will ensure that there is a productive resource for all those for whom it doesn't come so easily.
