Two grad students have been doing their research project in my classroom this semester. They are studying the effects of exercise on learning. They have helped me incorporate peddle cycles, wiggle seats, and a sensory walk/brain break into my classroom. I have been very pleased with the positive effects that movement has had on learning, behavior and self-esteem. For over 5 years I have had bungee and scoop chairs in my room to give students alternative and more comfortable seating choices. After 2 months of adding movement, I knew I needed multiple peddle bikes, wobble boards, and wiggle seats in my classroom full time. I need enough equipment for whole class access; and also enough variety so that students can change up their activity as their needs change. Seeing 10 year olds take a brain break, without prompting, during a test; is addictive. Watching distractable and disruptive students peddle their way through a math lesson totally on task; is addictive. Knowing that emotional, physical, and academic needs are closer to being met; is addictive. Without your help, the exercise and movement equipment in our classroom will leave at the end of the semester when the grad project is over. Help us continue this journey of "Moving to Learn"!
