The Max Axiom Book Series will be used every day in our science class to introduce science concepts and vocabulary through teacher-led read-alouds. My document camera will be used to enlarge each page on my whiteboard, giving everyone the opportunity to see the comic illustrations and words. A small segment of a Max Axiom graphic novel will be read providing opportunities for students to carefully consider in-depth science concepts, build a mental representation of important ideas, engage in class discussions, and clarify misconceptions. Each Max Axiom graphic novel correlates with our state standards and weekly science vocabulary. Science investigations and activities throughout the week will be based on the same science vocabulary that was introduced with the Max Axiom graphic novel. My students love to hear stories read aloud. The Max Axiom series will be incorporated in my science lessons, investigations, technology, and STEM activities to increase students' understanding of scientific ideas. Promoting active engagement in the read-aloud, give students a deeper understanding of concepts such as food chains. The graphic novels will be available at the "Readbox" bookcase in our classroom to revisit concepts. The year-end culminating activity will be creating a comic strip related to a topic in science. Integrating science and reading will improve students' conceptual understanding in science as well as developing students' literacy skills.
