I teach at a public elementary school for kindergarten (K)- 6th grade. There are 580 students of mixed nationalities and a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and we are classified as a Title 1 school. My classroom is a 1st-3rd grade self-contained special day class (SDC) for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have moderate to severe disabilities. All of my students have a primary diagnosis of autism and speech and language impairments and some have other disabilities as well. We have 2 SDC classes on campus and 2 to 3 general education (GE) classrooms for each grade level. My students are with me for all subjects and are mainstreamed into the GE when possible.
