Teachers are constantly updating curriculum, assessments, and teaching methods to meet the needs of their students. However, the classroom environment is often ignored. For decades the classroom has revolved around the standard desks, which are often organized in rows or pods. Today's students are hands on learners, they are constantly transitioning from tasks and collaborating with their peers. These desks often become a hindrance to their learning. Flexible seating allows for students to choose the type of seating that works best for them. In my classroom I plan on having options at all levels. The bistro tables and stools I have requested will allow students to stand or sit tall while they collaborate together. While the stools and exercise balls let students move around for different tasks and collaborate with their peers at more of a seated level. The balls will also keep the busy bodies busy so they can focus. Some students prefer to sprawl out on the floor to work and the bean bags I've asked for will allow for that comfort. The atmosphere that flexible seating provides is more natural for students and they feel more comfortable. The typical middle school desk has the chair attached to it, making it very difficult for them to adjust for any type of activity other than sit and get, which is not how teachers teach or students learn these days. With the help from generous donors, my students will have the opportunity to engage in learning based on their needs.
