Students will be able to compile various things in their learning journals, including mix and match manipulatives, response passages (mentor texts), interactive flip notes, etc... Often times, I have students start notes by cutting and matching items, like types of sentences, forms of syntax, figurative language, tone, types of story elements. Sometimes these notes can be flipped open, so glueing certain flaps and pages together is key in creating an interactive layout. Also, there are many times when students can benefit from studying a text they are reading to inspire and shape their writing (per 180 Days by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle). Students must read like writers, and write like readers. Otherwise, the two are separate and stagnant.
