My students attend a middle school in Wisconsin. The tough economic times are truly having an impact on the kids at our school. Reeling from the closing of GM and a number of other local companies, families are having a much harder time making it financially and emotionally. These struggles are having a huge impact on our kids, our schools and the community. Kids are resilient though and want to help make their community a better place to live. They are learning how going green can do just that. This project will inspire my students to become actively involved in a process that will promote a positive change in their community. They will become the teachers and show their families and community members that they can make a difference. They will learn small business concepts by planning, designing and creating a product (buttons, magnets, key chains) and then marketing that product and exploring how funds can be used for special projects that will have a positive impact on their community.
