As years pass and technology cinches a tighter hold on my students, the art and love of reading dwindles more and more. I am looking to start an after school program for reluctant readers to make a last ditch effort to help them ignite the fire for reading within themselves. Studies show that if you don't reach a student, in terms of pleasure reading, before high school, they will likely never find that passion. This project will put novels proven to be page-turners into the hands of students who reluctantly take a book to class with them every day and never crack the spine. I hope to create an environment that shows these kids that they aren't alone. That they can pick up a book and like it. That all it takes is a bit of commitment and the right book and they can be "readers" too. I will meet with students weekly, conduct read alouds, and set short reading goals to foster a sense of accomplishment that builds confidence. I will seek the help of my fellow teachers to identify students who will benefit from this group.
