I would like to start a 5th and 6th grade ukulele unit to teach independent singing with self-accompaniment. To reach this goal I would like to purchase 26 ukuleles for $1000. My students in the Altgeld Gardens community of Chicago have little access to instruments and this unit is an opportunity to give them experience in something they might never have anywhere else. Ukuleles can teach independence, ear training, and dexterity, and aside from the numerous studies on the importance of music in children’s brain development, the personal experience of playing music is unmatched by virtually any other.
