Flexible seating allows students to choose seating options and a workspace that works best for them. Many times when they are independently working on reading, writing, or math, students are able to choose a location in the classroom that gives them the space to work successfully. Currently I have only a few options for my students to choose from such as: sitting/laying on the floor with a clipboard, moving to the reading table, or sitting on our couch. They absolutely love to work around the room. When giving my students the choice to move about the room, I notice a difference in their engagement. They make good choices about where they sit, are more focused, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting in their seats at their table. My students are more focused on their learning and less disruptive to others when they are allowed the freedom to move about the room. I have chosen a variety of seating options so my students have even more choice of learning environments that work best for them. Many of my students like to wiggle and move. I have chosen wobble chairs, cushions, and exercise balls that will allow this that option. I have asked for pillows and lap desks for more comfortable seating on the floor. I can see how student choice in their workspace positively affects their focus and willingness to work on a task.
