One of the goals of the language program in our district is for our students to become bi-cultural citizens. They are not just learning a language; we want them to be immersed in the culture as well. I expose my students to the culture in numerous ways. A great way to expose them to culture is through literacy! Literacy makes that exposure so much more captivating for them. Through bi-cultural literacy, they will be exposed to the culture, traditions, customs, foods, arts, and holidays. Exposure to bi-cultural literacy will further support my student’s cognizance and appreciation for the culture and language. I will use these books in my classroom to expose my students to the language and culture by reading them out loud and creating extensions from those books. During the extensions, we dive deep into the content of the book with hands-on projects to expand their understanding of the concept. These types of extensions usually include a directed drawing with a writing component attached to it, or a fun educational craft. These books will be accessible to my students. They will have a home in our classroom library for the students to read and look at during our school day.
