One of the best ways to learn is through an extended study of a novel. "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien gives students the chance to learn about American history - the Vietnam War - while also analyzing theme and style. My students have asked to be challenged, and O'Brien's novel is perfect for them. As college students, they'll be expected to have read and learned about the classics, and it's hard to come up with a more perfect novel. While learning how to think critically about literature, my students will also learn how to think critically about themselves and their choices. They'll analyze the things they carry, too.
