I am requesting flexible seating for my classroom. My goal is that it will provide my students the ability to take responsibility for where and how they choose to do their learning. With flexible seating options, students are able to choose where in the room they will do their best learning. Research shows that some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating are things such as: burning more calories, using up excess energy, and an increase in motivation and engagement. A paper by Mathew T. Mahar, et al. reports that “Children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on task initially” (http://nycphysicaleducation.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Effects-of-a-Classroom-Based-Program-on-Physical-Activity-and-On-Task-Behavior.pdf) Flexible seating will allow students to choose from various seating options besides the traditional chair and desk. Students will be provided the opportunity to engage in physical movement while continuing to focus on academic skills. A classroom with flexible seating provides a different emotional feel. Students are empowered to make seating choices on their own. This also allows students to collaborate together in more relaxing and natural ways. The long term benefits of flexible seating are provided through the short term engagement piece. Students who are more engaged will be receiving and understanding more academics throughout the year. My classrooms is not just for my students. Through skills grouping, students move from class to class an hour each day. These products will provide all students in the grade level a chance to use and benefit from flexible seating. Approximately 100 students will be affected by this opportunity per year. As these products will be used for years to come, the number of students able to utilize them will rise and double each year.
