These products, like the geodes, gears and crystals, will create an excitement about science discovery. When students are excited about a project and the outcome, they are willing to write about it. First graders struggle to get their thoughts, ideas and observations on paper in written form. These projects will create a desire to share their experiences. The students will build their own moving gear creations and then be able to write how they made it and what the purpose is. They will break their own geodes to learn about the earth and be able to share their discovery with others classes. When we, as teachers couple exciting hands-on experiments and stem projects with the writing process, we see a higher rate of success from our students. I am very excited to embark on discovery and learning with my first graders and create an atmosphere where learning is both fun and rewarding.
