I teach in a special education preschool classroom for 3-5 year olds. Two of my students (age 3 and 4) are unable to speak or communicate verbally, which can make it difficult for them to express their needs to teachers and talk to and play with their friends in the classroom. We have recently begun using an iPad app that allows these two students to communicate, and it has brought them more joy than I have ever seen! We currently have a borrowed iPad, making it difficult to ensure the students can access it ever day. The app also requires us to switch between users (the two students), so opportunities to communicate are missed with the time it takes to switch the login, find the correct communication boards and pass the iPad to the next student. By the time this process has been completed, the opportunity to speak spontaneously or answer questions has long passed. We are so happy that we have found one assistive technology that both of these students love, but we do not currently have the resources to allow these students to access this technology as often as is needed. We would love you help to allow these two students to be able to have an iPad with them at all time, allowing them to spontaneously share ideas with teachers AND peers, answer questions during lessons and express their needs whenever they arise. These students are already so excited to use this app, so we can't wait to allow them to use it all the time!
