Our students will be facing new territory when we return to school in August. One of the saddest parts for me, as a librarian, is that the students will no longer be able to browse on their own at the library. Books will be brought to them in their classrooms. However when books are returned, they will have to go into 'quarantine' for a few days. This procedure means students will have to wait longer to check out some of their favorite books. It becomes especially hard for our third, fourth, and fifth graders who are wanting to read the selections for our yearly Battle of the Books competition.
Having extra copies of the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Association) books will ensure those students who are eager to read and compete won't get discouraged as they wait for copies to come out of 'quarantine'. The students were very disappointed when the competition was cancelled last year due to the shut-down.
I hope to keep their joy and enthusiasm for reading alive and thriving. Having more copies of these books will help nourish that drive and encourage those students in their love of reading.
