Most of the 7th grade standards require students to use previous skills and content and apply them to new material. Even with intensive review, this can be a struggle for those students who are already behind in math, have gaps in knowledge from previous grades, or for those who require extra support. A class set of calculators would make the grade level content accessible for every student in the class and would take away a lot of the unnecessary stress that comes with a math course. Math is an incredibly important and applicable content so the idea of students shutting themselves off from it simply because they struggle with basic computations is heartbreaking for me. When in life are you ever without a calculator (thank goodness for smart phones)? Why create an artificial environment in the classroom when calculators would allow my students to achieve deeper learning through complex real-world application problems.
