Have you had the pleasure of reading an Elizabeth Acevedo book yet? If not, you're missing out! My students loved her previous two books and the most recent release, "Clap When You Land" is a beautiful coming-of-age story told by two girls in two countries with one shared secret. My students love to see characters that reflect their life stories: immigration, bilingualism, colorism, cultural pride. "Clap When You Land" includes all of these themes and so many more. We plan to use this text in concert with Kylene Beers' "Notice and Note Signposts" strategy to encourage student cognition and inferencing powers. Most of all, kids are going to really like reading this book. Let's encourage a love of reading together!
