My students have choices provided in many ways; the class novel we read, online learning tasks, partners they choose, and more. They also move to different areas of the room to work, choose to use a stool, stand, or use a clipboard. All choices feed different preadolescent needs such as feeling loved, sense of belonging, power, freedom and fun. I want to provide an optimal learning environment with flexible work areas that provide the means for students to get their minds focused so they may flourish on a daily basis whether it be a student of ADHD, trauma, fatigue, high energy, social frustration, or simply a student tired of sitting. At the end of this school year, I added floor rockers, a lounge chair, a small pool with beach ball pillows, and a borrowed wobble stool. Originally, feedback was by paper surveys, but soon they began verbally giving their own suggestions. The most common question was-How are you going to solve "walk the stairs"? which was used for many reasons. While I anticipated an increase in focus with flexible seating, I was astonished at the increase of individual happiness, cooperativeness, willingness to coach others, empathy, and new social relationships. These multiple benefits of flexible seating led me to submit this project. The bean bag will be located in the peace corner; a place a child can be alone and manage their feelings. The pedal exerciser can be a brain break for the high-energy student, invigorate the tired student, and for any student to increase blood flow to move nutrients to the brain. Fidget bands and wobble stools meet needs of ADHD students and provide self-regulation to both the student that needs energized or the student that needs calming. Flexible work areas can help all students focus and flourish!
