I teach 10th and 11th grade English Language Arts at California High School in Whittier, a suburb of Los Angeles, CA. One of the groups of students that I teach from our school's Puente Program. This program focuses on students who will be the first in their families to attend college. The students apply as 8th graders, and if selected, become part of our Puente "family" for four years. A small team of dedicated teachers and counselors guide and mentor this group towards their ultimate goal of going to college. Our program has helped to foster future attorneys, engineers, teachers, and scientists among a group that is statistically underrepresented in higher education. 77% of our students are identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. But, with the passion and hard work of our students and advisors, we are defying those statistics and sending kids off to achieve their dreams.
