My students WORK HARD to GET SMART. The population at my school is extremely diverse with students with quick wits but who are unable to afford glasses; students who come from wealthy families but may be English learners; or students who are mathematical geniuses but face dyslexia. Ranging from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds to heart-breaking learning disabilities (or sometimes both), they often times do not arrive in my classroom with the family support or confidence to achieve. My students have been pinned into an upper-middle class neighborhood with upper-middle class expectations of high success. However, few realize that the majority of them are from a wide array of diverse neighborhoods in San Jose. My job is to close the education inequity that is present between privileged and unprivileged students. All students have the ability to achieve at a high level, and all it takes is a teacher with the right skills and tools to motivate them. WORD HARD = GET SMART.
