The core of my classroom revolves around my student’s stories. As a 7th grade teacher, I get to unearth their lived experiences in the classroom and then use that to guide their learning. It is important for my student’s voices to be heard, for them to be seen, and for their stories to be felt. I want to create a classroom environment where students are comfortable and feel that their lived experiences are respected. To me, this starts with a diverse classroom library. I constantly discuss the importance of learning from others and the dangers of describing a single story. The novels that I have requested seek to explore different topics of race, gender, and socio-economic class. They explore these topics while teaching relevant lessons to my students. Through this project, my student's will find their own interests and struggles represented and learn compassion from others' stories. Therefore, this project would help students become passionate, well-rounded readers instead of becoming reluctant readers.
