Quite simply, I want my students to have access to books in their homes and know that if I am not a part of helping families acquire quality books, students will continue to see books as the domain of school and not as an integral part of their everyday lives. Numerous researchers have shown that having books at home is a critical component in closing the achievement gap in reading. Additionally, the 2010 Children’s Access to Print Materials and Education-Related Outcomes study, showed that book ownership programs were also shown to have positive behavioral and psychological outcomes, regardless of poverty level. The students in my classes deserve some Momentos Magicos/Magic Moments as they read stories that represent their culture. This particular book has 16 vibrant stories that can be read at home in either English or Spanish, thus allowing parents to become a part of the reading journey with their children. While the books are going to my students, I know that the stories will be shared with younger siblings and cousins in the home, which helps set up these children for reading success, as well.
