I am a first year teacher at a small school of 88 students. I teach science to all 88 4th-12th graders. The students here are so very bright and motivated despite the many socioeconomic hurdles in their paths. Generally speaking, their goals are not very lofty. I am trying to teach them to shoot for the moon (or more specifically to shoot for Mars for some of them). They have come to expect less from their community and in turn their school. I want to give them so much more than they expect, and teach them that they can be the more that their community does not expect. I have started a robotics department this year with two competitive robotics teams, and I have 5 girls lined up and ready to start one of the very few all girl competitive robotics teams in the state. We will reach our destination in my classroom with or without the resources necessary, but it will be much easier with the support.
