I want to help my students develop their writing, speaking, vocabulary, and literacy skills by designing innovative lesson plans that involve having students create LEGO storyboards and then write and practice oral storytelling based on their creations. We recently borrowed a set of LEGOs from another school to use with a small group of 3rd graders for writing lessons, and the students loved the lessons and showed improvement in their writing motivation and achievement. I want to take the success of those few lessons and make it accessible to every student in the school. The school library recently won a LEGO building table in a raffle contest, but we do not have LEGOs to use with the table. The library does not receive a materials budget from the school district, and the funding we earn from running a yearly book fair barely covers the cost of new books. Having a LEGO building station in the library, along with individual building squares, an Early Simple Machines Set, and Simple Machines Set for students to use during lessons will give our students the opportunity to improve their literacy skills in a hands-on, engaging environment.
