All students need to be emotionally available in order to learn and thrive in the school setting. My students all have learning and/or social-emotional differences that can bring out frustration, anxiety, and feelings of unease. My goal is to provide students with safe, accessible tools that they may use in times of stress and frustration. At times, my students need a few moments to regroup- sometimes they are ready to process and talk about their feelings, sometimes they just need a space where they can sit and use tools to calm/reshift their thinking. The fidgets and calming tools that I have requested in my project allow students with emotional differences and learning difficulties to take a brief break to "reset." Often, when they do want to talk and process situations, they find comfort when they have something to keep their hands "busy." In addition, I work with students each day who have been diagnosed with ADHD, and these tools make a difference in focus and attention when used appropriately.
