My Project When I was in college, I struggled in computer science. After only one class I dropped out, because I couldn't keep up with it. I want my students to have the opportunity to minor and, maybe even major, in computer science related fields of study. Did you know that 58% of all new jobs in STEM are in computing, but only 8% of STEM graduates are in computer science? Our students have been using Code.org, Ozobots, Scratch and Vidcode to learn how to code using programs that are on the computer. I want the students to be able to take computer coding and programming to another level by using a piece of hardware. The BBC Microbit is just the tool we need. With the Microbit my students can work together to create cool creations from robots to musical instruments. A Microbit has 25 red LED lights that can flash messages, two programmable buttons that can be used to control games, and even use a low energy Bluetooth connection to interact with other devices and the Internet. Microbits may look simple, but they are powerful learning tools in the classroom. Learning with Microbits is the first step to for my students to pursue careers in computer science.
