My program teaches independent living and work skills to junior high special needs students about planning, prepping and serving food for themselves, their families, and in the food service industry. There's no experience like working with the real thing in real situations. Some of the students are not ready to use a stove, so the microwave will be used to teach safe cooking methods to those students. The nonstick cookware will be used with my more advanced students to prepare full, balanced meals in an actual kitchen. My students need to learn real-life skills in order to become independent and successful in the real world. They need to learn to cook not only to care for their own needs, but also to be able to secure jobs in the restaurant and food service industries. When our project is funded, students will use the items to plan, prep, cook, and serve what they have prepared to the faculty and students at our school. In some cases, the items that the students have prepared will be packaged, marketed, and sold to the faculty and student body at our school. This will teach merchandising and money skills. The money will be used to fund future cooking projects. Through the funding of this project, my students will learn to love creating in the kitchen and gain the confidence they need to become the budding chefs I know they are capable of becoming!
