Our classroom library should reflect the students in it. We need books where kids can see themselves in the story (that character is just like me!). Books are also an amazing opportunity for us to peek inside the lives and experiences of others. Books create such a great opportunity for my students to learn empathy and lean into other people's stories. We need a wide variety of books that feature characters with all different backgrounds to meet the needs of our varied learners. If you only stick to what you know, you’re creating this poverty of experience for kids and funneling them into that. I want to create a wealth of experiences for my students and open the world up to them.
