I teach and advocate for some of the bravest students I have ever met. These students come from all over the world including Mexico, Burma, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, Uganda etc... and they bring with them a passion for education and a desire to become fluent English speakers. Despite coming from poverty-stricken homes, they want to learn. All the while I teach them, they teach me customs and traditions from their own young lives, and we celebrate together our differences as well as our similarities. My newcomers/beginning and intermediate ELLs take on the difficult task of learning English while maintaining passing grades. They have to navigate to American teenage life while trying to discover their own unique identities, and I have seen tremendous personal growth from each students over these last few months. They have hurdled many challenges and I hope to do my best as a teacher to honor, inspire, and help them.
