From the middle school level on, student engage with increasingly more complex informational texts as a means of gaining knew knowledge. In order to prepare my 6th grade science students for success in high school and beyond, I have them working on comprehension of nonfiction, content-specific texts from day one. Having a classroom library filled with books that are aligned to the Next Generation Standards for Earth and Space Science would benefit my students immensely. Not only would these books strengthen my students' skills in reading; they would help to broaden their horizons as young adults. Coming from a largely rural area, many of my students have not experienced much outside of the daily routines of their lives. By exposing them to new and relevant topics of study, it is my hope that I can broaden their horizons. My ultimate goal is to inspire students to aspire toward a brighter future.
