Entiendes? "Ms. Evans, how do you say chaclas in English? How do you spell that? Why does is sound like a u? Where does the h come from?" Well, learning how to read English is a big struggle when you don't understand where letters come from, why there are extra letters, why some letters make 47 different sounds, there are multiple meanings of the same word, multiple spellings for the same word, and, oh yeah, their parents don't speak the language! I've been able to find some programs for my ELL students (15/19) in the class but unfortunately, since from a low-income area, my babies aren't able to afford a good pair of headphones to help them learn as best they can. We have 6 random pairs that I've found in my bedroom or that were left in the room from the previous teacher. A class set of headphones would make a huge difference. Being able to HEAR the language will help the students conversationally and when they are able to carry on a conversation and hear the proper pronunciation of a word, they will be able to quickly pick up on words while reading and learn from what they are reading.
