Most of us spend a lot of time in today's workplace moving and collaborating with others. Those who don't get the opportunity to do this probably wish they could move and collaborate more or would benefit from doing so. The truth is that the world is growing smaller and smaller, and the students in my high school English classes will have to collaborate with people from all around the world in their future careers, so it is imperative that I prepare them to do this. Because of this reality, I endeavor to make teaching English as collaborative and interactive as possible. In order for students to interact, they need two things: the ability to move and the feeling of comfort. This new seating will enable students to move, and it will make them comfortable enough to take the social-emotional risk of interacting with their peers. This may sound a little touchy-feely, but teenagers are often afraid of looking silly, and this can impede their learning. Students must feel comfortable in a classroom so that they will participate fully in class and collaborate with their peers. In addition, to participate in Project-Based learning & peer collaboration, students need to be able to move into flexible groups as needed, and desks do not allow for this, at least not as flexibly or as easily as I would like.
